According to the Speedtest index, the speed of broadband internet has been increasing in the country in recent times. Despite the increase in speed, the number of broadband internet users in the country is gradually declining, according to data provided by the Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (BTRC).

As per the latest update of Speedtest, broadband internet users in the country are getting 12.92 Mbps speed per second. Which was 12.60 Mbps in July.

On the other hand, the data provided by BTRC says that the total number of internet users in the country increased by 17 lakh 20 thousand in August as compared to July, but the number of broadband users did not increase. Conversely broadband internet penetration is decreasing by 0.01%. From June to August this year, broadband internet penetration decreased by a total of 0.3%.

Broadband internet penetration may decrease as the lockdown has been withdrawn and the people are working offline at a greater rate in the country.

Emdad Haque, general secretary of the Internet Service Providers Association of Bangladesh (ISPAB), said, “Before the lockdown, people used to work from home. Now the offices are open. As a result, those who used to work at home through the internet have to go to the office. As a result, many people no longer have broadband internet at home. In this case, the number of broadband Internet users may be slightly reduced.

"The number of broadband internet users has not increased in the last two to three months. Some points have remained stable. The work of our info government 3 is going on. If this project is implemented properly, the number of broadband internet users will increase again,” he added.

According to the BTRC, the number of broadband users in the country till August is one crore.
